I'm sending out proud and heartfelt congratulations to my comedy workshops graduate and former Comic Boom comedy club MC the incredible Romesh Ranganathan. He's only gone and won a BAFTA! Due to covid-19 restrictions the BAFTA ceremony was online. Rom had to film his own acceptance speech, which was hilarious and it featured a homemade BAFTA balanced on a bin!
The first blog I wrote on my website mentions the sheer joy of watching Rom winning his heat and getting through to the Finals of comedy competition "So You Think You're Funny." I was so excited when he won that I jumped in the air clapping and cheering and whooping. It would have been fine but I was surrounded by a large group of my stand-up comedy course students and graduates. They all jumped up with me. We cheered, clapped, hugged, jumped up and down. I think it's fair to say we made a bit of a spectacle of ourselves. But Rom knew just how much we were behind him. I'm very glad I was alone and on the beach when I heard the news that Rom had won a BAFTA...
